METAPHORS
This book proposes a game. The seeds are imaginary and
can be seen as having good or bad qualities, the pockets in the seed
"pod" are the environment this 'quality' inhabits. Assign a quality or
character to each seed and find it's pocket in the book 'pod', and then
compare notes.
This artist book consists of a box of nine
"seeds", an accordion "seed pod" and a short explanation that all fit
inside a box measuring 12 x12x 4.5 cm (4 5/8"x 4 5/8" x 1 3/4"). The
seeds are made with different techniques; crocheted, knitted,
embroidered fabric and bead work, in many different combinations. The
accordion seed pod is made up of nine hand painted images done with
acrylic inks on Canson Mi-tients archival quality paper, and finally,
the box is made of cardboard lined with bookbinding fabric in a deep
wine color. The small paper "belt" in the top holds the accordion above
the seeds when the box is closed.

Why Feathers?
Feathers are a miracle of nature. The
culmination of evolution's design process, infinitely more varied than hair of
scales. They also perform many more functions than any skin on any other
animal. They are also unique to birds. Bird's ability to fly, thanks to the
feather and some nifty adaptations to their skeletal structure, has given them
a unique place in the history of human culture.
" We are removed from the rest of the natural world in
that we can infer the future and examine the past. Yet history has shown us
that even the most advanced scientific thinking occurs within a framework of
human culture. So why not examine ourselves from different frameworks?
What can
we discover when we look at fashion in terms of sexual selection, or birds of
paradise as cultural models? What can we learn about nature and ourselves by
reversing our point of view?"

CRESCENTIA ALATA
I am still surprised every time I see this tree. There are three individual Crescentia Alatas that I know well but this one is my favorite. Actually, it is a pair of very old trees growing in the middle of granite boulders that are the home of a family of black iguanas. The fruit growing from the branches seems the work of a glue gun rather than evolution. The leaves also look somehow glued together and they grow lining the taller branches like armies of small people walking upward toward the sun. Even though the tree blooms throughout the year I have seen explosions of blooms after very heavy rains.

This kit makes a great little blank book with forty pages. The accordion structure of this kit allows you to add or replace pages so you can vary the color, add paper with lines, or correct and error. The covers are recycled cardboard and the pages are cut from drawing paper. To add pages use a page given in the kit as a template to make more. You can also compose pages on your computer to use in the book. The accordion is pre-scored to the correct dimensions and is made of cardstock.
Con este kit haces un libro en blanco de cuarenta páginas. Las tapas son de cartón reciclado y las páginas, de papel de dibujo. La estructura de acordeón te permite cambiar o añadir páginas, puedes variar el color, añadir papel con rayas o corregir un error. Usa una página del kit como plantilla para hacer más, incluso puedes componer la página en el ordenador.

El llibre d' artista com a espai de recerca
Taller dirigit per Pia Wortham.
Cada cop més el llibre ha estat usat per artistes, poetes i
escriptors com un objecte únic. Al llarg del segle XX el llibre va anar
perdent els convencionalismes del format. La utilització de textos,
trencant l’ordre i el ritme de lectura, la manipulació de materials o
imatges gràfiques han donat obres de gran creativitat.
Iniciarem el taller amb una visita privada a l'arxiu del Centre
d'Estudis del MACBA, on hi ha un important fons de llibres d'artista.
Ens han preparat una selecció de peces de diferents artistes, tècniques i
formats, que de ben segur trobareu molt interessant.
Pia Wortham fa temps que treballa i experimenta en aquest camp i ens mostrarà com confeccionar el nostre propi llibre. Aquest taller es fa en col·laboració amb el Traç - Centre d'expressió plàstica, utilitzarem les seves instal·lacions del carrer Paletes 3 de Barcelona, per fer les pràctiques.
